Why choose our school?
Performing Arts:
All children at Mornington Park have access to a music lesson every week. A proportion of each session is devoted to singing known songs as well as exposure to new songs. Songs include everything from action songs for junior students to Australiana and rock ‘n’ roll for seniors. The content of each session can vary greatly. Children are exposed to the development of beat and rhythm through the use of percussion instruments, participate in role play through songs and learn dances both modern and traditional.
Children are also given the opportunity to learn to play an instrument. In the early years, they are introduced to chime bars where they learn to play simple tunes such as nursery rhymes. This may then be followed by more difficult tunes that include sharps and flats played on glockenspiels, xylophones and electric keyboards. At the same time, children learn to read music formally through lessons on the recorder. In later years, students have the opportunity to learn the guitar. Students also have access to learning violin with an instrumental teacher. Children form Years Three to Six also have the opportunity to sing in the school choir.
Each year the school stages a concert in Term Three and a Carols by Twilight evening in December.
At our concert, every child appears on stage as a part of their class’s item. There is a huge variety of items on show at our concerts. From singing and dancing to short skits and recitals on musical instruments. Our choir performs as well as our guitarists and violinists. There is a great feeling of achievement from all students as a result. Performing before an audience of over 400 builds confidence and self esteem.
Our Carols by Twilight evening is a community affair with a picnic atmosphere. Families and community members are invited to join each other in the school grounds for a bring your own picnic tea or a barbecue. As the sun begins to set in the west, the school’s students assemble for to lead the community singing of Christmas Carols as well as performing some well known Christmas songs. Santa has been known to turn up at the end of the night but his attendance can’t always be guaranteed!
We are very proud of our Performing Arts program.
Breakfast Club:
WE are fortunate to have a breakfast program at our school. It operates on Tuesdays, Wednesdays and Thursdays between 8:15 and 8:40 with a “menu” that includes cereals, fruit salad, yoghurt, toast and apple or orange juice.
Our Breakfast Club is very popular on Tuesdays and Thursdays when a lot of children start the day with a run around the fitness track (our organised Runners’ Club). Most of the runners then attend Breakfast Club where they not only receive a healthy breakfast, they also enjoy a social chat before the start of the school day.
We are extremely lucky to have our Breakfast Club sponsored by the Save the Children Fund.
